Coming after successive orange Bowls being the Atlantic Coast Conference champions, Virginia Tech match against Tennessee was probably a disappointment to Virginia Tech since they were acquitted to bigger games. Virginia Tech definitely had higher expectations for the season since they were accustomed to playing in higher profile games. Contrary to Virginia Tech, Tennessee was very happy to be back to the limelight after spending the 2008 season out of the game. This was also helped by the fact that the match was in Atlanta a short distance from Knoxville campus which saw most of their fans attend. Regardless of this fact things didn’t get better for the volunteers as Virginia Tech managed to control the game and secure a relatively simple 37-14 victory.
Tennessee prowess was only felt during the second quarter after trailing by 14-0 as a result of Ryan Williams short touchdown runs. Tennessee saw themselves back in the contest with a set of scores of its own with Montario Hardesty, who is among the nation’s best running backs, scoring a four yard run with 6:43 left of the period. They continued to equalize the match in their subsequent possession with Denarius Moore catching a quick touchdown pass given by Jonathan Crompton. This was made with 18 seconds of the half remaining and it was certain in everyone’s mind that it would end as a 14-14 draw. This turned out not to be the case as Virginia Tech had something else in their mind.
Tyrod Taylor found Jarrett Boykin for a surprisingly long 63 yard pass that Boykin took down to the Tennessee four yard line with two seconds left in the half. That allowed Virginia Tech to regain the game’s momentum with a short field goal and a 17-14 halftime lead. The Hokies were able to roll from there thanks to a dominant second half effort on both sides of the ball. That allowed them to cruise to an easy win.
First, Virginia Tech dominated the second half on defense. The Hokies pitched a second half shutout, recovered a fumble, and never allowed Tennessee to have even a chance to score. It was a virtuoso performance from a group that has been dominant all season long. The Hokies also controlled the game offensively thanks to Ryan Williams. Williams had a dominant season when he wasn’t even the projected starter early on Darren Evans went down with a knee injury, however, and Williams responded with 1, 655 yards rushing and 21 touchdowns for the season. He finished this game with 117 yards and two touchdowns to have a very good freshman season.
David Wilson and Tyrod Taylor continued to secure each a short run touchdown during the second half of the game as Hokies continued to beat Tennessee. Taylor had also had a composed match passing with 207 yards through the air. The defenders did a good job of controlling Tennessee’s Hardesty who was pivotal in this year’s Tennessee’s success. He completed the season with more than 1300 yards, though Virginia Tech held to a season low of 39 yards. Nevertheless, he managed four passes for 79 yards hence his effectiveness not limited totally by Virginia Tech.
