Coaching high school soccer

In coaching high school soccer, you may wish to disagree but it’s true that communication is the most important aspect to get success. Coaching is an art of communication. This has the effect of expressing yourself to people with a view to perform them things in precisely the same manner.

Majority of coaches in soccer coaching are the players who used to play the game in their younger days. Still, there are several problems that they have to find solutions to. The reason why many of these issues show up is the coach’s inability to communicate. You must recognize that there are certain issues related to communication that need special attention if your job is to be made easier.

These have been described one by one.

Emotions of the coaches take over their minds while they are watching their kids play on field. Instead of acting as analytical observers, they become more of spectators. They tend to overlook some chief points that could help the team improve on certain fronts. They therefore lose the opportunity to have an objective conversation aimed at winning the game.

Even though the coaches are well versed with the technicalities of the game, they are not trained specifically on communication. For example; in soccer coaching, use of a video or a flip chart is not very common since most coaches don’t know about them. When the coach finds it difficult to communicate his messages clearly, it brings monotony to the game even if he has a complete knowledge of the game.

Coaching Youth Soccer

In coaching high school soccer, communication becomes all the more important because the kids start to understand the game quite well. They have been doing these soccer drills for some time but at different levels. You can do away with the monotony of repetitive messages by frequently changing the layout of training.

It may come as a surprise to you that coaches often forget that their training sessions are carried out by people. The objective of training is lost because the coaches get so much occupied in just conducting the sessions well. For instance; the communication is incomplete when an instruction is given to a player but without his/ her name thus making it difficult for any of them to apply it.

In football coaching, there are some points that need special attention and they are as follows:

• Every message coming from the coach carries equal importance. So it’s necessary that they are deduced correctly.

• Your language should be positive enough to push the players to try hard to perform well. Allow them to grow and become better players instead of highlighting their flaws.

• All players should get an equal opportunity to sit with you and learn. Studies indicate that coaches spend relatively more time with star players in team (up to seven times more!).

• Be proactive in communicating the problem the moment you see it coming.

• Strengthen the player’s self respect by matching criticism with praise. Tip the balance more towards praise with players in coaching high school  soccer.

Believe me. Once you start to apply this in your training programs, the benefits will far exceed your expectations.
