A Passion For Life – Hockey Coaching
Kids have different ways of growing up. It depends on their geographical location and immediate environment. Most kids are brimming with energy. Some kids may have certain ways of releasing their energy but most of them do it during playtime. Among the youth sports that are available for kids nowadays, I can’t help but wonder why they also get hooked with hockey.
Hockey is a sport that is mostly played on ice, although a variation of it known as field hockey is played on a field. It doesn’t make use of a ball but instead it uses a vulcanized rubber disk approximately three inches in diameter. The puck is passed around or hit by a paddle, more appropriately known as a hockey stick. The objective is to get the puck through the goal to score a point. Only the goalie can hold the puck with his hands. Hockey has grown form a backyard game to a professional sport. Teams from different countries often meet yearly to determine who the best hockey team in the world is.
Hire a coach. While hockey camps give you the chance to improve your shooting skills and hit more hockey goals over a few short weeks, a coach does more than help you polish your game; they’re often your mentor. Especially if you’re looking toward a professional career, it’s always a good thing to begin early. Swimming champ Michael Phelps has a long-running relationship with his coach Bob Bowman. Ace soccer player David Beckham has a long-running relationship with his manager Alex Ferguson. And NHL’s youngster Sidney Crosby has a good one running with his as well.
Go buy a ticket to an NHL game. Aside from an exciting, action-packed way to spend a weekend night, watching the professionals do it can give you something you won’t read in any how-to books – the opportunity to walk up to a pro and ask for a tip, not to mention an autograph. Watching a live game is not so much about learning new tricks to hitting more hockey goals but in experiencing it and being motivated by the experience.
A coach who has a passion and love for the game should know how to impart such traits to his players. There is no such thing as a passive hockey team. Hockey teams are active and vibrant. A coach should be able to roar his team to life and gain respect by how he shows respect. Kids would be lost if they don’t have somebody to show them the way. Excellent players emerge from excellent coaches. Kids see their coaches as secondary parents therefore a coach also carries the responsibility of developing a child’s personality.
Much like any endeavor, it’s always best to approach hockey with a goal. Think of it like your regular exercise. You took baby steps at first and progressed through your current program. Hockey or any sport for that matter, works similarly. Set your goals high and work on it one hockey goal at a time. With constant practice and determination, you’ll hit your target soon enough. Don’t be afraid at aiming for the sun; if you fail, you’ll land among the stars
