A Take A Look Directly Into The Iowa Hawkeyes
Football began as an exclusive club sport in the City of Iowa in 1872. Then it progressed to becoming an inter-collegiate intramural game in 1882. However, it was not until 1889 that the University of Iowa officially organized a college foot ball team. The team was invited to join the Western Football Conference which we know today as the Big Ten in 1899. In the following year, after a season of consistent victories, the team shared in the Western Conference title.
It wasn’t until the early 1920’s that the team began to show a notable performance when they won 20 straight games under coach Howard Jones. Then the team caught the national attention in the season of 1939 when they won several upset victories. They were one point shy of the Big Ten Title but their Most Valuable Player Nile Kinnick won many distinctions, including the Heisman Trophy for that year.
In 1952, coach Forest Evashevski joined the team and from 1955 to 1960, under his guidance, the team was able to get to top five of the national rankings four times. They also won the Rose Bowl twice as well as the 1958 FWAA national games. That was followed by nineteen seasons of losses. The losing trend came to a halt when coach Hayden Fry was hired in 1979. And from that time until now, The Iowa Hawkeyes have been showing a good performance.
They began by garnering three Big Ten titles plus the exact same number of Rose bowl appearances. They were included in the top 25 teams three times. In 2002 they were in 8th place, in 2008 they were number 20 and then again in 2009 they rose to 7th place... The team entered the top 25 at season’s end three times. They were in 8th place in 2002, number 20 in 2008 and in 7th place in 2009.
Since its creation as a team, the Iowa Hawkeyes has participated in 1,000 games 24 of which were bowl games.
Since the team was organized, they have participated in a thousand games. 24 of these games were bowl games.
