Ralph Wenzel played his football for the San Diego Chargers and the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1966-1973 and developed dementia in his late 50′s. At the time, protective head gear was not as advanced as it is now and as a result of playing pro football, he said he had sustained more concussions than he could dare to count. Most of these cases are focused on knee and shoulder wounds which were reputedly sustained as a consequence of playing professional football. Nonetheless what's so different about Wenzel’s case is that it is claimed that his wounds were sustained as a result of his work (pro football).

There is already a body set up called the ’88 plan ‘ which is a player’s union body that reimburses ex players who have suffered wounds as a result of their sport to the tune of a maximum of $88,000 each year. This is all hunky dory; however the problem lies in the proven fact that some retired players would possibly not be able to receive insurance for long term care because they already show signs of neurological damage. This is often crippling for the families who need to pick up the check for such long-term care of family and friends.
